Specifically, Arcus works to advance LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) equality, as well as to conserve and protect the great apes. Kevin Jennings is the Executive Director of the Arcus Foundation, a leading global foundation advancing pressing social justice and conservation issues. They're actually reflecting the complexity of human sexuality that does not fit into nice neat little boxes no matter how hard we try and make it. And I think the critical thing for us to understand is that these young people aren't confused. And this is a generation of young that are more comfortable with having their sexuality be more fluid. There were the gay people here and the straight people here. And I think that can be confusing for my generation because we like everybody in neat little boxes. Increasingly in this generation a lot of young people are refusing to label themselves gay or straight because they don't like those labels. The fact is there's a degree of bisexuality in the middle.
It's not like there's some rigid dividing line that there are gay people on this side and straight people on the other. And I think that concept of a spectrum can be very useful for people. 6 if you're exclusively homosexual and 0 if you're exclusively heterosexual.
Kinsey was an early researcher of sexuality, and he talked about how sexuality fell along a spectrum of 0-6. And anecdotal evidence is not valid for generalisations.It's 60 years old now, but the Kinsey scale is still a very useful tool. Usually men act more masculine and women act more feminine but both sexes express both feminine and masculine traits. I find it hard to believe it was societal factors (a popular belief when it comes to these mannerisms), since we knew for a fact his understanding of sexual relationships was non-existent.Įveryone acts feminine and masculine. He never hung around with other boys, was disgusted by farting (which was widely considered to be hilarious), had the stereotypical limp wrist, awkward running posture and the unusual speech tendencies. On a somewhat related note, do you think that the feminine behavior is intentional? The kid I was talking about was way too young to feel the need to "act a role", which is evident considering he continued his denial well through his pubescent years. Stereotypes themselves are only generalised observations and shouldn't be disregarded on that basis. I have never, and I'm sure others can also assert the same, met a straight male who exhibits the speech tendencies and behavior of a stereotypical homosexual. What I'm referring to only targets the feminine homosexuals. Homosexual/lesbian relationships tend to entail one masculine role and one feminine. That kid you know is not enough to say that all gay men are distinguishable by their personality.Īgain, I never said that all gay men are distinguishable. But there are also gay men who act stereotypically gay. There are gay men who you cannot tell are gay until you see them kissing another man.
